Some Tips For Positive Parenting
1. Give lots of praise and rewards for positive behaviour, this is the best way to help children develop the most appropriate behaviour
2. Give lots of love and cuddles
3. Take care of your own needs - you are a person too. You need to feel good about yourself to be able to feel good about your children.
4. Get plenty of rest, eat well and take time for yourself
5. Keep your sense of humour
6. Build up and enjoy a supportive network of friends
7. Decide on the do’s and don’ts of your household
8. Get agreement and support on any decision from your partner if you have one. Try to involve your children in this process by asking for their ideas and suggestions. Remember to listen carefully to what they say.
9. Explain clearly and firmly to the children what the rules are for your family. Make sure they understand. Just like you, children are more likely to obey rules when they understand why the rules are important.
10. Be consistent and firm. This reinforces the message that the rules are important
11. Decide what will happen if a rule is broken. Approaches such as time out or loss of privileges are effective. Be sure that the approach is right for the age of the child.
